WAR ITEMS.
Mr Rudyard Kipling was present with , Colonel Le Gallais' brigade during the attack at Karee Siding. Six British warships are now lying in Delagoa Bay, viz., the Forte, Pelorus, Magicienne, Partridge, Dwarf, and Widgeon. Five hundred British subjects were ordered to leave Johannesburg on April 5, and 100 have been ordered to quit Pretoria. The messages of condolences irom Lord Roberts and Sir George "White on | the death of General Joubert were much appreciated by the Boers. Lieut. Tarbutt, who died trom typhoid at Pretoria on Feb. 13, was buried from the English Cathedral. President Kruger allowed 12 of his captive brother officers, including Colonel Bullock, to act as bearers and chief -mourners. On seveial Boer residences flags new at half mast. When the forces had got into Colesberg, Captain McKewan, acting, doubt- j less, on information received, raided the j houses of some known rebels, and had ! the contents all brought out. Then ' they searched the boxes and found, as expected, vast numbers of new suits of clothes with the sale tickets still on them, which the rebels after their manner had stolen from the stores. In the bottoms of most of the boxes were supplies of Mauser cartridges. Surgeon-Major C. L Cunningham, who is acting as a special correspondent of the " Lancet," undertook to fulfil the novel duties of auctioneer. He drew up his oyez paper, with which he sent a Tommy round as bellman, and on the appointed day faced the crowd with all the willy patter of the professional auctioneer. It was really a highly: successful sale, and what gave zest to it was that the Mauser gentlemen, who are safe in gaol in considerable numbers, watched the proceedings from the gaol windows. Surgeon-Major Cunningham was able to hand over ,£225 as the proceeds of the sale.
