Trial by Jury.
♦ The Feilding Amateurs numbering about 40, arrived m Palmerston last evening by special train, and the entertainment given by them m the Theatre m aid of All Saints' Church was an unqualified success. The whole of the building was well filled, and ©very reserved seat engaged. One would have thought the|uriusually high prices would have kept out the larrikins, but strange to say, the annoyance caused by them last evening was, if anything, greater than usual, m fact, Mr McNeil at last could not stand it, and gave them to understand' that they could have their money back if they did not keep quiet. The miscellaneous concert given previous to the production of the operetta passed of successfully, a number of the. items being loudly encored. The following we cannot but refer to, as they were .ieoidedly the principal and most effective :— Duet, " Mayins:,' r by Miss Atkins and Mr Giliner ; Violin solo, " Life let us Cherish," Mr Cohen; Song, 11 Love the Pilgrim," Miss Ellen Atkins ; Violin solo, " Die Blume," and " Die Trauni," Mr Cohen ; Song, " Seranata," Miss Ellen Atkins. The "Chaffers," a male quartette, brought the first part of the performance to a close amidst much , laughter, the item being a most amusing one and well rendered by Messrs Gihner, Hartgill, Crossman, and Coote. After a . short interval the curtain rose again, and •♦ Trial by Jury " was put on m a manner comparing favorably with many representations by first class professionals which we have seen ; but then the plain • tiff was a host m herself, and played her part so truly as to prevent any percep-. tion of fault m the minor roles. The choruses were exceedingly well rendered, the individual parts well sustained ; m fact, the representation entirely was well worth seeing, and comoletely astounded the audience, a number . of whom never' expected to see so correct an impersonation by amateurs. We are sorry space will not allow us to refer to the performance more m detail, and can only congratulate the Feilditig Musical Society on possessing such talented members, who will, we trust, repeat the performance m Palmerston at an early date.. The stage fittings and all necessary arrangements of the kind were left m the hands of Mr « G Mitchell, our local cabinetmaker, and were of course carried out as they should be m every detail. The hall arrangements ware under the supervision ot Mr Hanltain, to whom all praise is due for the energy and spirit displayed by him on the occasion.
