Great Railroad Strike.
i (Per Mail Steamer.) The great railroad strike m the North West is comparatively ov«r, the employe* returning to "work, but only under protection of the military. After efforts had failed with J. Gould to secure arbitration between the Railroad Magnate and the Knights of Labor, riots ensued at ; St Louis. The striken and ■ military came into collision, and several of th* former were knocked down. The trouble m the West assumed luoh -a threatening aspect at on* time that the ' War Department made lecret preparations, and could have rushed a large body of troops to the scene m very quick time. Powderly holds a leading position m the organisation, of tho , Knights who are said to number four or fire millions. He has the tntbuiiaan .or. a social reformer, combined with th* shrewdness of a successful capitalist. He has written a remarkable letter to Gould, who had threatened to presscoto •very striker for damage to his.propwrty, m which he challenged Gould to tako that course. H» asks Gould to open to the public the means whereby he hss . piled up the wealth he control*, and ' declares that the «y«tera which reach** oiit on all sides, gathering m millionr of dollar* and keeping thtm out of th* legitimate channel* of commerc* mast die. These utterances hay* attract**! considerable attention.
