MR GLADSTONE'S MANIFESTO.
(ELECTRIC. TELEGRAPH. — COPXRIOET* ) (SPECIAL UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Lcndon, May 4. Mr Gladstone's manifesto to the Midlothian 'electors wan the result of Lord Harticigtou's and Mr Goschen'a Scottish crusade. The manifesto vir* tually abandons the Land' Purchase scheme, while it concedes the principle of Home Rule. The opiuion m Scot* land and Wales seems favourable to the retention of Irish representatives at vVestminister. The amendments hint; ed at by Mr Morley will probably satisfy the Radicals. It is stated that if the second reading of tbe Land Purchase Bill is-carried by only a narrow majority a dissolution will take place. The Times states that Mr Gladstone's manifesto is too democratic ;to appeal to Class prejudices, and that none of the great colonial capitals will be found to support his Irißo proposals.
