Promotion of the Fine Arts in Scotland.

Through the Wanganui agent, A Tod, Esq, we s-lean the information that the Koyal Association for the promotion of the fine arts in Scotland have arranged to issue this year a volume of engravings illustrative of the scenery of the Bivor Clyde, from Drawings by George Reid, E.S.A. These drawings will be similar to those furnished by the same eminent artist for the illustrations of the aconerv of the River Tweed, and they will be reproduced in facsimite by M. AniandDurand of Paris. The following are > among the subjects intended tu be illustrated :— •' Ab : ngdou," " Fall of Stonebyres," "Bothwell Castle," "Glasgow Cathedral," "Dumbarton," " The Clyde at Greenock," •• Bothwell Bridge," " Arran," and " Ailsa Craig." The Rev. Dr Walter C. Smith, ot the Free High Church, Edinburgh, has kindly agreed to furnish the letterpress. The sketches already made justify the Committee in believing that the work will be a most, desirable one, and that it will be as successful as the issue of the River Tweed illustrations, which resulted in a large addition to the membership of the Association. A. copy ot the Tolumo on ordinary paper can be obtained by subscribing one guinea to the Royal Association for the year, which will also entitle to one chance in the distribution of paintings in July 1886 ; a copy having the engravings printed on Dutch paper may be had fora subscription of two guineas, which will entitle to two chances, in the distri bution ; and a copy with the engravings printod on parchment, and handsomely bound, may be had for a subscription of five guineas, which will entitle to live chances in the distribution of paintings. The original drawings, or most of them, will be included in the distribution. As the number of copies issued for the subscription of two and five guineas will be limited, immediate application for them is recommended. From Mr Tod we also learn and the information may be of service to some of our readers, that the. that the Association is composed of an-* nual subscribers of one guinea 'and upwards. The funds of the Association are appropriated to the purchase of modern works of art, in painting, drawins:, or statuary, and to the execution or purchase of engravings, etchings, bronzes bas-reliefs, models, or other productions oi art, for distribution among the subscribers. A portion of the fund is also devoted to the acquisition of modern works of arts towards the formation of a national gallery. A general meeting of the subscribers is annually, held in Julyjwhen a Committee of. Management, isappointed' for the ensuing, year, andwhen the different works purchased for the Associatu n become, by lots publicly drawn, the pf< perty of individual members — subscribe rs being entitled to. one chance , for every . gumea subscribed.
