From a letter received in Wanganui by a business house, we learn that the different shipping companies interested in conveying passengers to and from the Colouial Exhibition have agreed to the following rates : — Soloon — Return, [. available for twelve months, £115 ; ditto for nine months, £102; second class, available for twelve months, £65. —Herald. ; " :
Referring to the recent disastrous bush fires, the Napier Herald says: — A solicitor in town has been consulted by three different settlers, who complain that another settler fired the bush on his section for a burn although his neighbours begged him not to do so till the wind. changed,. and pointed out the destruction that would ensue. Old Wanganui, residents are beginning to compare notes aneut the depth of water in their river, several maintaining that it is lower now than they have ever seen it. The contractors for the Porewa section of the Central Railway are pushing on the work with great' vigour. Three hundred men are employed, eight miles out of the twelve of formation have been completed, all the bush is do\yn, and four miles of the rails will have been laid by the eiid of the current week. The contract time expires on the 11th of April, but as the Government delayed the contractors a mouth thu time has been extended to the 11th of May. If they can get the timber for the bridges, the contractors fully anticipate being finished by the 11th of May.— Marton paper. - , . ,
