Chinese Law.
Says the Fooehow Herald :— " We only heard of one instance, daring the China New Year settlements, of punish* ment to a defaulting debtor terminating fatally. It appears that a satire shoev mtker, 23, who* although having a wite to support, contributing also to-^ ward the m linteuance of his aged parents was unable to meet his engagements. The result was that his creditors afrl sembled at the unfortunate man's house a tew days ago aud hurled their victim into a tank of w^ter and held him under until life was extinct, No steps however have been taken to bring the scoundrels to justice, and we understand that m such cases the authorities very seldom interfere."
