DESTRUCTIVE FIRE.

A most destructive conflagration occurred in the French- quarter at Shanghai on the 31 gt, December, 250 houses being burnt to the ground. The fire originated in a tobacco shop, and within-10 minutes from the outbreak twenty buildings were in flames. At the time of the fire the tide was at ebb and there was no -vi ater procurable from the creek surrounding the native city, and on account of the great distance it was some time before a stream of water could be brought to bear with effect on the burning buildings, Most of the buildings destroyed were tea houses and opium shops, but there were also two .fire cracker manufactories, and the crackers exploded with a loud report but without doing any other damage.
