THE ELECTION OF MAYOR.

To the Editor of the Marlborough Press. Slr,— That someone has put his foot in it in connection with the election of Mayor in not keeping to the correct letter of truth is evident from what has come out since your last issue. It is well known that there were on the day and at the time of nomination, only four persons present, viz., the Town Clerk and three Burgesses, consisting of the presumed candidate, his proposer and seconder. “A. M,” evidently one of the four, has written a letter to the Express, and after the usual amount of abuse of you, Mr Editor, which is like pouringj water on a duck’s baek, concludes by making somebody say that which is not correct. 1 n the letter the Town Clerk is made to say “ Gentlemen, Ido not know if you are aware, but I sincerely regret to inform you, that although Mr Green asked me last night to attend to this business till he came—l hear he died about an hour ago—however, here is an envelope, enclose the nomination paper, and I will mark the time you delivered it at this place, and I will make it my business to call a special meeting of the Council to appoint a Returning Officer to complete the business of the Nomination. As one gentleman only was nominated, the question of a contest cannot arise. lam sorry for this, as I like to see a good fight, and the best man win, and a little rivalry in this way is very wholesome, and productive of much good.”—while in the Express of the 15th, the day of nomination, the following paragraph was published Mr Swanwick being the only candidate nominated this morning for the office of Mayor of Picton was declared duly elected ” ; and as it is generally reported that the Borough Town Clerk, who is stated to have made the above pithy speech, is also correspondent for the Express in Picton, it is evident there is a misstatement somewhere. Who declared Mr Swanwick elected ? and who is wrong ? I would also advise “ A.M.’’ to adhere to something near the truth and not pointedly make misstatementß. I am, &c., Inexperienced.
