News has been received that the captain and crew of the Annie Brooks were murdered in September by natives on Newstone Island; also that a party of French naturalists were massacred last month by the natives of Moresby Island.

The following were the results : First heat Laycock, 1 ; liawden, 2. Second heat : "Wallace Ross, 1 j. Riley 2. Third heat: Hosmer, 1 ; Smith, 2. Fourth heat: Trickett, 1 ; Nicholson, 2. The defeated oarsmen are—Elliott., Barrier, Largan, Feby, Gibson, Anderson, and Olasper, who do not compete further. Two more heats will be pulled to-morrow, Friday, and the final contest will take place on Saturday. A very severe snowstorm has fallen in Scotland.

A Cabinet Council was held again yesterday, but no decision was come to as to the policy to be pursued in Ireland. The question of holding a winter session of Parliament, was also considered, but was likewise left in abeyance. It has transpired that Mr Chamberlain, the President of the Board of Trade, demands of his colleagues that reforms shall be carried out in Ireland together with the coercive measures which they propose to adopt. The protest which was entered for the foul, between Trickett and Smith, in one of the heats, has been disallowed by umpires. Final results —Laycock, Ross, Hosmer, Smith. Laycock, the Australian oarsman, has challenged Hanlon for the championship of the world. Parliament has been prorogued until December 2nd. Non-payments of rents in Ix-eland is still on the increase. The ship Araby Maid, bound from London to Port Chalmers, ran ashore today at Kingstown. All the lives have been saved.

The Araby Maid is badly strained. It is expected that most of her cargo will be saved, but the extent of salvage will depend on the weather. November 22.

Owing to the influence of the Right Hon. Mr Gladstone, the Cabinet is again united, and therefore, it is- not expected that a winter session of Parliament will be held.

Five arrests have been made at Loughrea, in Ireland, for an attempt at re-in-stating an evicted tenant. Obituary—Field Mashal Sir Chas. Yorke, Constable of the Tower of London ; and the Right Hon. The homeward mail, via San Francisco, which left Auckland on 12th October, was delivered in London to-day.

A sanguinary fight took place at Ballina, in County Mayo, Ireland to-day, between the police and the people, who were obstructing the arrest of some Leaguers. Several policemen were severely wounded. Fifteen persons have been arrested in Mayo on a charge of intimidating landlords at Ballimok.

The Novembor-December series of wool auctions opened to-day. There was a good attendance. Prices were firmly maintained, and there was fair competition.

Latest intelligence from the Capa states that 1500 of the colonial force havo repulsed 5000 Basutos on November 13th. 300 rebels and 6 colonials were killed and wounded.

A 5 a Fenian procession was parading the streets of Cork to-day a collision occurred with the police, upon whom several shots were fired by the mob. Fourteen Fenians were, however, arrested.

Rome, November 20. The Vatican has sent a strong protest to France against the decrees for expulsion of Jesuits. Vienna, November 18. Two thousand persons have fled from Agram in consequence of the earthquakes. The Austrian Government make a loan of 50,000 gulden to the town for its restoration, and 1800 workmen are already engaged in rebuilding the public buildings and residences which have been destroyed. Calcutta, November 18. ' News has been received that a revolt of native tribes has broken out in Cashmere. Teheran, November 20. News has been received that severe reprisals have been inflicted on the tribes of the Kurds for their depredations in Persian territory by the Persian troops, which were despatched against them. 1 Paris, November 20.

The port of #hich sufleied severely last month from heavy floods, has been again visited by a serious storm, which /has done considerable damage to the town and its surroundings. The Divetto (sic.) has overflowed and a considerable extent of country is inundated. Constantinople,. November 20. The Albaniap chiefs have refused to assist a contingent of Turkish Redifs in forcing the citizens of Duleigno to surrender the town, and the latter continue to show open hostility to the Turkish troops, which have been despatched there. Dervish Pasha’s force in advancing on Duleigno met the Albanians in great, force, and fired on them, the enemy replied most vigorously, which compelled the former to suspend their advance on the city. News has been received that Dervish Pasha bas entered Duleigno. A slight conflict took place at the outskirts of the town between the Turks and Albanians, but the latter were soon overcome and submitted to the entry of the Dervish. Cape Town, November 22. News has been received that a tribe, hitherto friendly, has twice attacked the colonial residency at Lerida, in Basutoland, but were on both occasions repulsed.
