The Marlborough Press. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 1879.

In inward English Mail, via San Francisco, arrived in Pieton last night. A meeting of gentlemen interested in the formation of a Cricket Club for Pieton is announced for this evening at the George Hotel. On Wednesday next the Presbyterian Tea Meeting will take place in the Assembly Hall, and as a number of the members of the congregation are working hard to make the meteing a success, it is sure to be well patronised—See advt. Those interested must bear in mind that the election of a school committee, and the determination of the boundaries of a proposed School District in the Pelorus, will be held at the Boys’ School, Havelock, on Saturday, December 6th. The great length of the Financial Statement has absorbed so much of our space, that we are compelled to hold over several items locally interesting, including a report of the special meeting of the Pieton Road Board and Havelock news. Applications were invited by the Borough Council for the purchase of the crop of growing grass in Nelson Square, and for making some improvements at the end of the fluming in Kentetreet. For the purchase of the grass two tenders were received —Williams, £2 2s; McCormick, £4. The latter was accepted. For the work in Kent-street —Debell, £5 6s 8d ; Dunn, £4 18s 6d ; another tender was sent in, but being informal was not entertained, and Mr Dunn’s tender was accepted. Ambition sleepeth, and it will need some strong shock to arouse the dormant aspirations of the capable burgesses in Pieton. The Returning Officer gave notice that he would, on Saturday last, receive nominations for the office of Mayor for the Borough of Pieton. Noon, the hour for closing, arrived, and not a single nomination had been lodged, and the office must remain unfilled until the extraordinary vacancy thus caused becomes filled in ordinary course. The position of Mayor is usually looked upon as one to be desired, and that the office is not coveted here is a sign that Municipal honors have not yet come to be appreciated at their proper value. A numerously signed requisition has been presented to Mr T. Williams, thanking him for services in the past, and asking him to again fill the office ; and the difficulty is likely to be surmounted by the present Mayor continuing the duties. Mr'Williams has served the burgesses for some years in various public affairs, and we are glad to find that they have aroused themselves, and shown by the wording of the requisition that they appreciate the many valuable services he has rendered to the town. Plans and specifications for the Pieton Baths having been prepared, the directors have decided to call for tenders at once, so that the Baths may be finished in sufficient time to be used this season. In another column will be found the advertisement calling for tenders, and the reason the time allowed builders is so short may be found in our remarks above. The subject of a commodious and convenient bathing place for Pieton has been delayed altogether too long, and it the residents permit auy long time to elapse before going on vigorously with the work, they will perhaps unintentionally do the place considerable injury. Only last week a family paid a flying visit to Pieton, and would have remained during the summer season had there been facilities for sea bathing, as there were several delicate daughters in the family, for whom sea bathing bad been recommended ; but wanting the accomodation, a lengthy stay was not made. With the muny advantages Pieton possesses it should be one of the health resorts of the Colony, the climate being mild but bracing, the scenery picturesque, and the facilities for boating and fishing second to none in New Zealand. When to these recommendations is added secure and comfortable sea bathing, we may anticipate that many will be found anxious to avail themselves of such opportunities for obtaining relaxation from the cares of business, and perhaps at the same time for the purpose of re-establishing failing health.
