The steamer Auckland, which arrived here about eleven o’clock on Thursday morning, was 25 hours on her passage from Nelson to Picton, being compelled to put into Gard’s Bay through stress of weather. LAUNCH OF THE FIRST NEW STEAMER FOR THE PANAMA ROUTE. The launch of this fine vessel took place from Mr Gudgeon’s yard, at Cubitt Town, on the Thames, in the beginning of March. She is described by a correspondent as being a magnificent ship of 1500 tons, builder’s measurement, propelled by twin screws. She slid beautifully from the ways, and sped more than half-way across the Thames before bringing up. A daughter of Lord CJaud Hamilton christened fhe graceful ship, giving her the name of “ Ruahine.” At the luncheon which followed the launch, several Australian and New Zealand gentlemen were present. Below are the dimensions of the first of the Panama liners : l ength between perpendiculars, 265 feet. Breadth over all, 34 feet. De ill amidships from top of spar deck to top of floors, 25 feet 7 inches. Tonnage, builder’s measurement, 1500 tons. Propelled by two screws. Nominal power of engines, 350 horses—loo horse power more than required by contract. Accommodation for 100 first-class, and 100 second-class passengers. Guaranteed speed, loaded, 12 knots. Brig rig, patent self-reefing topsails, iron lower masts. Two steam winches, Daunton’s fire engine and pumps, lightning conductor. Classed A 1 at Lloyd's.
