RATES OF POSTAGE

ON LETTERS, BOOK-PACKETS, AND NEWSPAPERS, WITH THE REGULATIONS AFFECTING TIIE POSTAGE, TRANSMISSION, AND DELIVERY OF THE SAME. LETTERS. I. —Inland Letters. From any part of New Zealand to any other part of New Zealand: — Not exceeding $ oz 2d. Exceeding £ oz., and not exceedidg 1 oz. 4d. „ 1 oz., „ 2oz. Bd. . And so on, increasing fourpence for every additional ounce or fraction of an ounce. 2. —To the United Kingoom. By Southampton or by direct ship— Not exceeding oz 6d. Exceeding £ oz., and not exceeding 1 oz. Is. „ 1 oz., „ 2oz. 2s. And so on, increasing one shilling for every additional ounce or fraction of an ounce. By Marseilles— Not exceeding $ oz. in weight 10d., Exceeding \ oz.,and not exceeding 1 oz., Is 8d „ loz. „ 20z,, 3s4d „ 2oz. „ 30z., 6s 8d Every ounce after the first Is 8d 3. —To British Colonies and Foreign Countries (For which mails are made up direct.) Not exceeding J oz 6d Exceeding \ oz., and not exceeding 1 oz. Is. „ 1 oz., „ 2 oz. 2s. And so on, increasing one shilling for every additional ounce or fraction of an ounce. Except in the following cases, where special rates are payable. 4. —To France and Algeria and Foreign Countries, through France. Letters addressed to Hongkong, Penang, Singapore, and any part of China or Japan, the Phillippine Islands, Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Labuan, the Moluccas, and Siam, are chargeable as follows: Not exceeding £ oz Is Exceeding \ oz, and not exceeding 1 0z... 2s And so on, increasing two shillings for every additional ounce or fraction of an ounce. 8. —To Naval Officers on Foreign Stations. Letters addressed to Officers serving on board any of Her Majesty’s ships on a foreign station, when sent through the United Kingdom, are chargeable as follows: — Not exceeding \ oz Is Exceeding oz, and not exceeding 1 0z... 2s „ loz, „ 20z... 4s And so on, increasing two shillings for every additional ounce or fraction of an ounco. 9.—To Naval Seamen and Soldiers. Letters sent to or by Seamen and Soldiers in Her Majesty’s Service will be transmitted within the colony, and between the colony and any postoffice in the British dominions, at a charge of one penny, provided that the following regulations are observed : 1. Each letter must not exceed half an ounce in weight, 2. It must be superscribed with the name of the writer, his description or class in the vessel or regiment, and signed by the officer at the time in command. 3. The postage must be prepaid. Every letter of this description posted or received in this colony, not in accordance with the foregoing regulations, will be treated as an ordinary letter.

The postage upon these letters must in all cases be paid in advance. 10.—Free Letters. Letters on the public service of Her Majesty’s naval and military forces are exempted from the payment of postage, if bearing the words “ On Her Majesty’s Service, and the signature of the officer in command of the force on the service of which the letter is despatched. But such letters cannot be transmitted by any irregular route, or one entailing additional expense on the Colonial Government. Letters on the public service of the General Government of the Colony are transmitted free by post, if bearing the words “On the public sdrvice only,” and the signature of some officer of the General Government authorised to frank letters. II. —Registered Letters. Registration Fee . . . . Is. In addition to the ordinary postage chargeable on any Letter —except in special cases. NEW SPARER S. 1. To any part of the Colony,if published in the Colony, and posted within seven days from publication - - free. If not published in the colon}', or not posted within seven days from publication, each - - - - Id. 2. To the United Kingdom,via Southampton, or by direct ship - free. To the United Kingdom, via Marseilles, each ----3 d. 3. To the Continent of Europe, via Trieste, each ----2 d. 4. To Syria and Turkey (not through the United Kingdom) not exceeding two ounces - - - - - id. And so on, at the rate of one penny for every additional two ounces. BOOK PACKETS. 1. To any part of the Colony, the Australian Colonies, or to the United Kingdom, via Southampton. Not exceeding 4 oz 4d. Exceeding 4 oz., and not exceeding 8 oz. Bd. „ 8 oz. „ 16 oz. Is4d. And so on, increasing eight pence for every additional half-pound, or fraction of lialf-a-pound. 2. The following British Colonies : Ascension lonian Islands, Bermuda, Natal, British West Indies, New Brunswick, Canada, Newfoundland, Cape of Good Hope,* Nova Scotia, Falkland Islands, Prince Edward Island, Gambia, St. Helena, Gobi Coast, Sierra Leone, Heligoland, Vancouver’s Island. Not exceeding 4 oz 7d. Exceeding 4 oz., and not exceeding 8 oz. Is. 2d. „ 8 oz. „ „ 16 oz. 2s. 4d. And so on, increasing one shilling and two pence for every half-pound, or fraction of half-a-pound. BANKERS’ PARCELS. Containing only Bank Notes’ Orders. Bills, and Promissory Notes, Cheques. Passbooks, or Bank Returns sent by or to any Bank, or Banker, within the Colony, (provided such parcels are securely closed and sealed, and contain no letter or communication in the nature of a letter, and bear along with the address of such parcel, the words “ Banker’s Parcel, without Letter.” subscribed by the sender of such parcel, with his name and address,) shall be received as Book Packets and shall be sransmitted, within the eolony, at the same rate as Book Packets.
