POLL-TAX ON CHINESE.
The Legislature have agreed to a Chinese Prevention Law : a poll-tax of £lO per head on every Chinaman landed. Registration of the Chinese already here, and a registration fee of £4 each are main features of it. There are some heavy penalties for breach of the law: The fining and imprisonment of the captain who brings more Chinamen than one to every ten tons burden of his vessel, and the seizure of his ship. These provisions seem stringent, hut they arc necessary to the peace and order of the countrv. There ore already some 70,000 male Chinese here, and not a single female. Their habits, says the Sydney ‘ Herald ’ are filthy and degrading. Water, on many of the diggings, is a very scarce article, but these Chinamen pollute and waste it. The wives and daughters of our shepherds, and other insolated persons are often violated by those men of lax morality; so the people willed this prevention law, and the law was made.
