Re-election of Me. Adams foe Wairau-valley. Mr. Adams having been elected Superintendent of this province, a writ was issued for the election of a member for Wairau-valley, the nomination to take place on Wednesday last, when Mr. C. Watts proposed, and Sir. W. Ockley seconded, W. Adams, Esq., who was returned without opposition. Supposed Death by Deowning.— There is every reason to fear that another life has been lost by drowning. Last Wednesday week a man named James Stevenson was seen to go towards the Wairau river, near Mr. Timms’s, on horseback, and the horse emerged from the river, without rider, about a hundred yards below where the unfortunate man was last seen. Every search has been made for the body, but hitherto without success. European Letters, &c. —The following is copied from the New Zealand Gazette of April 23 : General Post Office, Auckland, 11th April, 1860. The attention of the public is particularly directed the damaged condition in which mnch of the correspondence from this colony reaches the United Kingdom—owing to the melting of the seals, causing the letters to adhere to one another. It is therefore requested that the use of sealing wax may be, as far as possible, abandoned, in the case of letters that have to pass through hot climates, and wafers or adhesive envelopes employed instead. Henry Johu Tancred.”
