Sitting at Ranfurly. On Thursday, 22nd; Feb., the First Otago Military Service Board-held a sitting at Ranfurly: present—MegsrV _ > H. Y. Widdowson (chair), A. D. Bskjrf and G. Kellett. Captain Free was thJOB military representative. Charles Christian Archer (labourer, Kyeburn Digging) appealed on the ground of over age, and produced a certificate of age.—The appeal wai allowed. Adolf Aldorf Bropby (labourer, Paarau) appealed on a similar ground, and his appeal was allowed. Authur'Thomas Clifton (bank clerk, Naseby) appealed on the ground that be failed to come up to the standard re-v. quired for active service.—The appeal was withdrawn. Ralph Compton Darling (miner, Oturehua) appealed on the ground of domestic hardship. Three brothers bad gone to the front.—After evidence had been given the case was adjourned for three months, the matter to be further considered. Frank Griffiths (ploughman and shepherd, Patearoa) said be was the only support of his aged mother, who was a widow and almost an invalid. He lived at home, but was often away for weeks at a time mustering and shearing.— The case was adjourned for'the production of fnrther evidence.

John M'Erlane (Ranfurly) appealed on the ground that he was not enrolled in the First Reserve when he received notice..- The evidence Bnowed that aptellant was under age, and the appeal was allowed.

The Mareburn Gold and Scheelite Company appealed on behalf of Chaa. George Scarff (Hyde), alleging that sheelite miners were scarce, that the company was short of labour, and that Scarff was required for the production of scheelite. Schrick (Patearoal ap. pealed on behalf of Cyril Schrick ' (baker and butcher), on the ground that her son had been her sole assistant forborne -years, supplying with bread and' meat a district which extended from Pukepouri (Hamiltons) to Paerau (Styx)—a distance of 21 miie3. —Cyril Schrick entered an individual appeal on. the ground chat his mother waß a widow, and dependent upon him for carrying on the business.—After evidence had been given, the appeal was adjourned sine die, conditional on the appellant remaining in tha same occupation and being essential. Lawrence Spedderi (Gimmerburn) was exempted, being o v er age. Robert William Weir (motor garage proprietor, asked for time to settle his affairs, and was allowed until March 31. John Ross Peterson (sheep farmer, Kokonga) appealed on the ground of hardship.
