THAT GRIEVANCE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sik, —In your issue of the 29th I notice an answer by " Cowboy" to mine of the 22nd. " Cowboy " savs that I show by my own writing that a grievance does exist. I never denied that the Hawkdun sheep went on the reserves, what I endeavoured to do was to point out to you that we get much more benefit from the Hawkdun Hun than the Hawkdun people can possibly get from our reserves. " Cowboy " says he fails to see where the unfairness or ingratitude comes in. I am afraid "Cowboy's" sense of gratitude is rather weak. Then h 0

goes on to say that he Ims seen an employe of HawkduD on different parts of the reserves but never his seen him trying to shift the sheep. " Cowboy " evidently has convenient eyesight. Then he says what is possible for one manager to accomplish -honld not be difficult for another to carry out. I don't know anything about station management, but I can say that I have lived in St Bathans for about thirty years, and T do not see any difference between the present management and that of the former as fir as the sheep trespassing is concerned. As to l'>adsof .-straw, I never siid tliMt loads of -i raw were carted in'o S'. Bat bans for ,starving stock ; I simply said that I could mention cases where Mr Wilson had given loads of straw. If "Cowboy" wants to know the recipients he can easily find out for himself as T do not feel called upon to mention names. What he says about the different sections of the community Ido not understand. As to the murmurings of the people being deep and low, since these letters have appeared in the paper I have beard several people commenting on them, but have never yet heard one person agree with " Cowboy." In fact people are wondering why the letters were written. Thanking you in anticipation.—l am, &c, Fair Plat, St Bathans, December 2nd, 1907.
