pait.aroa v ranfurly. (By Ouk Pateaboa Correspondent.) This match was played on Saturday last, at Ranfurly. As your Ranfurly correspond ent was not present, the players asked me to report the match. W. Chirnside and Johnston opened for Patearoa. The former got a two and a three and then opened out properly with a fear fully hot drive back to the howler. The bowler was our old friend Dave Marsha I, and F. Matbiaßcame in in place of Chirnside. Johnston was the next to go, Forrester catching bim smartly off the same bowler Mathias then tumbled to Baker, and three were down for 8. Things were looking blue when Cambridge and Wilson got together : but thev stopped for a good while, and when the next wicket fell the total was 30. But after that another short procession was stare I and ieven were down for 41. D. Chirnside and G. Mathias then made a stand. I have never seen Davy play so well, He played a lot of splendid bowling from Baker and others, and scored very rapidly and opportunely. A'at bias also rose to the occasion, aud the eighth wicket fell at 74. The others made a fc», and the total was 92. Ar.uour stalled the Ranfurly innings well. It wan bis firnt. appearance against us, and the fairly-wide reputation of our bowlers did not trouble him. He just played the bowl itig on its merits, and had made a wellplaytd 14 when he was given out l.b.w. and departed in a state of intense but acquies cent astonishment Marshall quickly hit up 10, but the others failed to do much and the total was 37. Johnston had good bowling figures, and Chirnside, though he had 19 scored off him before he got a wicket, took four for an additional four rnrts In Patearoa's secund innings W Chirniide and young M'Skimming began well, and when the boy bad made a good dozen there was one clown for 39. Wilson played up to his old form, and his partnership with Chirnside was very productive ; the others not doing anything extra, the innings closed for 121. It was now 6 o'clock, and although it had been arranged to play until half past 7 if necessary, the Ranfurly men gladly pulled up the stumps so as to escape the cold wind that had been tearing about since 4 o'clock, and Patearoa won on the first innings by 55 runs. M'Lean, Baker and Armour got most wickets for Kanforly, and Marshall and Screen also bowled some good overs. Tbe losers dropped a lot of catches, and overthrows were prolific of runs. Williams and Keeley were both good with the gloves Messrs J Crerar and H Cooper umpired, and young Pottinger and J Millar kept scores in most accurate styie. The game was played in the most fraternal spirit, as is usual between these teams. The proprietresses of the BaiHay Dining Rooms ( hisses Dyk* '~l„«ui>vmi) served up the most bouuteouo repast that it has ever been ray happy lot to assist in demolithing after a match. We had had an.eight hours' fast, and only two had a touch of influenza After consuming two 16-inch plates of splendid roast beef and vcgptables I had to refuse repeated offers of further helpings. Drawing the lineatthe large assortment of pies and puddings. I went; leaving tbe man on my left (who lisd kept time with me at tbe beef) ogling a freshly arrived plate of nice looking custard and jelly. Scores : Patearoa.—First Innings.
