Ibe motion was lost, en y the rn iv t and seconder voting or it. Cr Da «'>n nic. o ■ .in I Cr Ryan seconded 1- a- tier he-.'ranted.—Carried wiili two dix-cn loii « OBD NARY MEETING. The monthly meetinir on Monday evening was attended by—His Worship the Mayor (Mr Kirk), Crs Mitchell. Reed, Dawson, Bcftth, Marslin, Ryan, Hrnwn. Minutes The minutes of the Inst ordinary and nperinl meetings were and confirmed uu the motion of Crs Ryan and liced. Correspondence. I The I'rime Minister forwarded a telegram anking that all public huildinsrs flying flag* should hoist them on the 21st inst., Trafalgar Day. Dr Ogston forwarded a request from the Chief Health Officer for particulars of our water supply, in order to find out the actual amount used by individuals in cities The Sec ctary of the Charitable Aid Board intimated that on the levy for the year ending 31st March, ID'»8 t tbe council was indebted to the amount of £fi up to tbe end of September. Tbe reason why no notification of the amount due by tbe borough bad been srivcu was also explained. It bad been customary, after the 31st of March, to remit levies on the previous year's basis. Tbo levy could not be calculated until tbe valuations from the wholn of the 33 contributing bodies bad been sent in. Naaeby's contribution was £1 per mnntb. The Olerk wrote to tbe secretary of tbe Charitable Aid Hoard informing him that the council bad taken exception to tbe statement Ibat Na«eby was a defaulter in the matter of charitable aid. Ho had forwarded valuation* of tbe borough on the 20th July. In tbe past be bad remitted tbe levy on tbo basiß of that of tbe previous year, but owing to a resolution by tho Charitable Aid Board be anticipated that tbe Maniototo County Council would in future distribute charitable aid in this district. No request for the levy bad been made in tbe letter he bad received from bim (tbe secretary of tbe board) in July last, so bo took it that there was no necessity to forward anything until the amount of the levy was ascertained. In reply to tbe District Health Officer tbe clerk wrote that wc bad no means of measuring the supply to householders. The supply was so good thai residents used it for gardens and other than domestic purposes, On tbe motion of Cra Death and Brown the inward correspondence was read and the outward approved of, Finance. Accounts amounting to £4l 3s 3d were passed for payment, on tbe motion of Cr* Marslin uud Ryan. The Tailings Difficulty. Mr R. Johnsione, County Chairman, and \ir F W lnder, Borough Clerk, as requested, inspected the works in' the gully at the back of tbe town and reported that tbe work done had heen well carried out, and value was received for the amotin expended It at tended to anil an extension made to tbe wall opposite to Mr A fcniith's property the town would be wife fur a considerable time. The main object should be to confine the water coming down tbe gully, which would prevent eriuus damage from btini; done,—Tbe report was nceiv.'d on the imcuoti of Cre liitcbell and Reed and Victor.'* Johnstone and lnder tbt'nkid fji what U-e,\ brtu lone. iliu Kiiifi'B 1-irtbday. The Mayor suid that throughout the colony there wan a movement to observe the holiday on Monday. Ho had received a lequest from Alexandra asking on what dpy we were going to obrerve the holiday, Cr Dawson had lun rviewed a few business people, find moved—That tbe holiday in Nastby be held on Monday, lltb inst, in stead uf Haturdiy, 9th inst. and that the date tie advertised in I we CHRONICLE and posted on the blackboard.—cieconucd by Cr Marslin and carried. The Deep Sinking. Tbe M yor said he had called a public meeting for Saturday evening to consider the Premier's promise to investigate tbe subject He had bad a good deal of correspondence, by letter and by telegram, with our member and they would probably get Bumetbing done if tbe public ware etiergelic. 'l'bey should not leave it .o their member to have to say if nothing weie done that they did not put j out their bands to help themselves. ! Cr Beath moved—That tbe mayor's action in tbe matter be approved of, and be hoped tbat success would attend bis efforts.—tieconned by Cr Dawson, who also considered the i.ublic meeting a wise step. Cr Mitchell considered there was a prospect of success judging by tbe indications that showed tbe wbole depth to which the shaft of 26 years ago was sunk j Tho Mayor said he bad forwarded an invi . tation to leading mining men in tbe district to bo present and hoped to see the meeting representative of Maniototo County. General. The Mayor explained what steps bad been taken to attend to one or two matters of do tail work iu connection with the streets of the town. Cr Dawson said that some misunderstand i ing appeared to exist in tbe minds of some J of tho county councillors over the work in i connection with the retaining wall iu the gully. They seemed to think that the borough having made the town safe, would deny any further responsibility in the matter. He moved—That the Miiyor, Cr Keeci and tbe Clerk be a deputation to wait on tbe County Council to cx|.luiii matters and disabuse their minds—Cr By an, who also bad beard some such opinions expressed as Cr Dawson referred to, seconded tbe motion, which was carried. Cr Dawson suggested that tbe water should be laid on to tbe Fire Brigade Station. The gearman was unable to grow nnytbing in bis i garden for want of water, Thirty shillings or £2 was all tbat it would cOBt. He thought if the council snpplicd him with a hose, the Fire Brigade should supply tbe pipes. Cr Marslin thought the brigade would agree to that, and Crs Dawson and Mitchell moved a motion accordingly, which was curried.

A Complaint.* Cr Marslin said that recently Mr Barnard's chimney wont r<n file. When the brigade turned out. lie, as fire inspector, was refused admittance, but alter discussion Mr Barnard let him iu. ,
