CRICKET.

NASEBY B Y. PATEAROA

(By Omi PaTkahoa CorkbspomJent.

From a Patearoa point of view, the above match was a very disappointing one. Given a win in this game, our fellows hrid a chance to annex the ling, while a loss woulil practically put thorn out of it. The game had a favourable appearance f6r Patcaroa at lunch time, with six Naseby wickets down for 50 odd. The remaining wickets brought the total to 71, and although the wicket was a knuckle-bruising and ticr-chcroiu one, the flag was iu sight. The innings lasted two hours.

Patcaroa commenced to lose wickets right off. Marshall was in form, and our men were wofully out of both practice and luck. W. Chirnside, who had just done a ten-mile wa'k before the game started, was playing himself in nicely when his partner failed to respond to a call. Both men being at one end when the other stumps were levelled, and the rules of cricket specially forbidding two batsmen facing the bowler at once, Chirnside had to go. Just before ho went, he played a ball bard on to the ground at bis feet, and had just time to save his wicket. " Hard luck," said the wicket keeper. Cambridge played confidently and well, and be and W. Chirnside did a lot of smart running between the wickets. D. Chirnside and M'Dowcll also did well, but the total was six behind that of Naseby. The Patearoa batsmen actually scored five more runs off the bat than Naseby, bat Anderson wasn't lavish with byes. It still wanted 2J hours of closing time, and two innings seemed quite probable," but the water-tap was turned on soon after the start of Nascby's second innings, and what was hoped would be a brief adjournment wa3 made. Some keen ones stuck to tha field for a while, but at last they, too, sauntered towards shelter. The rain cased off s'ightly after a little, and several Patcaroa men stepped on to the road from under Mr Hughes' verandah. That settled it, and down it came properly. Result : Naseby won by sis runs on the first innings, and the flag, with the aid of a good glass, could be seen waving on the top of Mt Ida. One glass, one flag ; two glasses, two Hags, I suppose. Chirnside's bowling'was good, and Boddington batted skilfully. Brown also showed good batting powers, Messrs J. Crerar and All-*orts umpired. Mrs Hughes provided her usual liberal and excellent table .at lunch time. Naseby B.—Fir*t Innings. • ,•■ H A Boddington, b YV Chirnside ... ,28 J Paisley, b Ai'Lean ... ... • ..,■--0..
