CRICKET.

o On Saturday last the Patearoa cricketerers played a team from the Naseby Cricket Club on the Recreation Reserve. The day was almostperfect for cricket and the game was played in a spirit quite in harmony with the day. The wicket proved far too fast for Patearoa, and this and the excellent trundling of D. Marshall account for the smallness of their scores. Dave was doing such execution that when he caught another man out somebody was cruel enough to suggest that he should be " court-mar-tialled:" The fielding on the whole | was up to country form, and one or | two excelled themselves, picking up and returning the ball with remarkable accuracy. The batting of the Patearoa lads ■was disappointing because it was not up to their last year's form- They were unfortunate in losing the services of Chirnside who had been lamed at practice the night before. Though he played, it was evident to all that he was disabled and so unable to do justice to his powers as a cricketer. W. Ring was the only one to get into double figures and he well deserved his runs. There were no big scores in the Naseby innings. H. Browne rattled up 17 in a short time, but J. Marslin played the best cricket and made the longest stand, being run out when well set., M'Lean and Schrick bowled with good effect but Johnston was not so straight as he used to be. When Patearoa went in for their second innings they, had to face a. deficit of 32 runs, and it was hoped that these would be wiped off and a decent' score made, so as to give Naseby something to do to win. Their effort was altogether too feeble and they did not succeed in saving the one innings defeat. The visitors were entertained at a dinner laid out in Mrs Crane's well known style which always gives satisfaction. Wilson captained the Patearoa team while A. Marslin acted in a similar capacity for Naseby. Patearoa—first innings. J. Wilson, bD. Marshall ... -.;. 3 W. Chirnside, bD. Marshall ... ... 0 0. Cambridge, o A Marslin, bJ. Marslin 0 J.
