CRICKET.

o PATEAROA V. NASEBY. The return match of these clubs was plnyed at Patearoa on New "Sear's Day. The visitors arrived about 10.30, and Captains Crerar and Horsweil soon had their hosts arranged. Patearoa weat first to the wicket and were not dismissed until 61 had been placed to their credit, to which Naseby responded with 50. For the home team J. Wilson made by far the best stand for his side in this innings. He is especially strong in leg hitting and as he is but a colt we shall probably hear more of him if he is diligent in practise. For the visitors the best batting was done by the Rev. Mr Christian, who played good steady cricket for hisl9. In the second innings the home players were dismissed rather more easily for 46, Chirnside being the only one to reach double figures. Naseliy began badly, four wickets falling for 17 runs, but after Horsweil appeared the prospects of a close finish gradually increased, and as the scores approached equality the excitement proportionately increased. Horsweil gave one or two chances but nevertheless batted well for his 22 not out, and Gossage reached LI before dismissal. Eardley was set for a score when he was unfortunately run out. Of the bowlers Johnston and Chirnside divide the honours for their side with seven wickets each, Wilson getting four. For Naseby Alf. King lowered seven wickets in the first inoings and one in the second. Horsweil got three in the first and five in the second. Gossage four in the second. As the hot weather seems slightly to have aSected the record of the bowling we refrain from publishing the analysis. W. King kept wicket very well for Patearoa, and Marslin excellently for Naseby. The Patearoa boys fielded considerably better than the Naseby, whose display was rather worse than fair. We must single out for special commendation a couple of excellent catches by Sneeston. ; The visitors were warmly welcomed, handsomely treated, and sent home with victory rejoicing (let us hope with modesty). They were entertained at Grieve's hotel, where a very nice lunch was spread for them. The match resulted in a win for Naseby by three wickets and 12 runs.
