NASEBY PUBLIC SCHOOL.

The annual meeting of householders for the election of a school committee for the ensuing year was held on Monday evening, when, as usual, there was a bare quorum present. Mr. David Barron occupied the chair. ANNUAL REPORT. The aunual report for 'the year ended March 31st was read as under : "During the year the committee held ten meetings, at which many matters of considerable importance to the welfare of the school wero discussed and agreed upon, the most importaut being the unsatisfactory state of the school as disclosed at the annual inspection. As a result of this examination, the Education Board referred Inspector Goyen's report back to the committee with an urgent request to adopt bo me means of increasing the efficiency of the school. The committee, while acknowledging this inefficiency, asked the board to take the matter in their own hands. This resulted in the head-master's services being dispensed with, and subsequently the appointment of Mr. Malcolm as his successor.

" In order to stimulate the attendance, the committee arranged that prizes should be given at the end of the year, the marks to be regulated by regular attendance and quarterly examinations. The satisfactory increase of pupils has fully justified this new arrangement. "Through the absence of the secretary, the balance-sheet has not been returned by the Education Board, aud the committee are therefore unable to present an audited statement of accouuts for the year. It might, however, be remarked that the liabilities are nominal, with the exception of a contract entered into for the erection of a fence round portion of the school grounds. The dilapidated state of the old feuce had become such an eyesore that it was deemed advisable to proceed with the work, and trust to the Education Board to pay for or substantially subsidise the committee's efforts in doing what has been always understood to be a woi k outside the committee's duties.

" Certain repairs have also been carried out in conucctiou with the teacher's residence and fencing rouud the reaideuce reserve. Other repairs are still required for the house, to which the attention of the board has been drawn, and which we trust will be undertaken by them. " The year commences under more favourable circumstances than have prevailed for some time past. Mr. Richardson set vigorously to work to remedy the weaknesses of management which were discovered and severely pointed out by Inspector Goyeu, and we have little doubt that this work will be carried to a successful issue at the eud of the year under Mr. Malcolm's control."

The report was adopted, on he motion of Mr. Guffic, seconded by Mr. E. Wood. Mr. Guffie said he thought the committee deserved the thanks of the community for the able manuer in which they had discharged their duties. Mr. Barron briefly acknowledged the compliment. ELECTION OF COMMITTEE. The chairmau stated that only three nominations—namely, Messrs. Kerr, Nowmau and Barron—had been received, leaving four vacancies to be filled.
