Speaking nt the close of a lecture at the Aldershot Military Society, on the new rifle for the r.niiy, Lord Wolseley praised the resolution to re-ann the British forces with the heat possible weapon which was obtainable with the science at our command, but he deprecated the impression that our forces were inferior to those of any other nation. As far as his (Lord YVolseley's) observation went— and it was pretty extended - the British army was better than any other. All the new ideas which had been t.ent out from the War Office were directed for the attainment of greater efficiency in the future, and that idea would be most strenuously carried out. By the way, says the " Northern Advocate," there is a curious sequel to the famous Dargaville gold discovery of a few weeks ago, about which the timber township went nearly rampant. The rich colors washed out in the dish are stated to have been nothing more nor less than brass tilings, with which a practical joker salted the artesian well shaft on the Dargaville property. Consequently, application has not yet been made to that family for the right to mine over their auriferous estates.
