OPENING UP THE LAND.
The following correspondence has taken place with, reference to the opening-up of Sans 222 ead 222b for settlement:— Melneea, Ducedio, 2«th Sspt. Mr ForreGter, Ewebum Progress Committee. Dear 6tr,—Herewith Z enclose yoa tbo answer received from the Minister of Lands fa response to yonr petition re opening of Buns J2I and 222 a for settlement. The petition was accompanied by A strong recommendation from myself in favor of it I have some'reason to know that what is deterring the Governmentfrom opening up more land 'ust now is the question of land revenue. What I profoee is that when the Minister comee down to determine the terminus of the Otago Central Siulwuy, I should take him to Eweborn, and give you notice, eo that a deputation of the settlers eUoold wait on him and Btutg tficir'case. I faucy that on personal inspection; he'wotzld be much better able to andei etaad the wantS'-of.; the diacriet, and he would also see the nature of the land proposed to be thrown open. I have therefore taken tho liberty of writing him. stating that deputation* at various places would be glad. to wait, apoa him ; and I herewith enclose you a copy of the letter.
