DUKEDIS, April 12. Owing to a case of small-pox break* ingouton board the Tainui yesterday, she has been placed in fuarantine. An interesting case was heard at the Supreme Court yesterday—viz., Daldedybill y. Brunton. It was a case for £SO damages for libel. The case was most entertaining, being kid against Mr Brunton, an evangelist long and well known in Dunedin, for a letter written reflecting en the character of plaintiff. The case goes on again this morning.

John M'Kenzie Macdonald, who was sentenced to penal servitude for life for firing a building in Wanganui and causing the death of a lodger, has been released from custody in the Wellington Gaol on account of old age. Yesterday, he found his offices locked, and was refused admittance by the chief messenger. He questions the right of the Government to remove provincial district auditors.
