It has been decided, in consequence of the Town Hall being engaged on Friday evening, to confine the Bruce auction in connection with the Presbyterian Church to Saturday afternoon and evening only. A large number of articles of a saleable character have been promised. The sale is announced to commence at three o'clock, and will be continued till everything is disposed of. At the usual meeting of the Mutual Improvement Association last Thursday, the business of the evening comprised a debate on the question, " Should the Creditsystem be Mtolished 1 " Mr Samuel Law led the affirmative, and the Rev. J. M'Cosh Smith and Mr M'Hutcheson the negative. A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings. Messhs Fyke, Ross, Thomson and Gillies —the Otago members who voted against the Vogel Ministry—were burned in effigy at Dunedin on Monday evening. A largo crowd witnessed the burning, and the proceedings were of a very sultry character. Should the members named ha rejected by their constituents when next they seek their suffrages, it will be a punishment they n'chly deserve. We understand that M. J. S. Mackenzie, Esq., M.H.R., has been acting (by special request) as whip for the Stout-Vogel party.— A correspondent at Wellington, writing us under date August 22nd, says :—" Affairs are in an awful mess here, and a good many now regret their opposition to Mr Stont, for it is impossible to form a Government. Grey has undertaken to do' so, but the Southern party has ..refused to join him.—Your member got on splendidly with the Address-in-Beply. ; He was rather nervous, as was to be expected, but he delivered a speech-which is acknowledged on all hands to have been a masterly oue, and one of the best' maiden speeches ever delivered within the 'precincts of the House. He has a clear, forcible delivery, and you need not fear but that he will reflect great credit on his e'onatitiu'iicy. 1 j predict a brilliant political career for him "
