THE KYEBURN MURDER.

DE WHITTOVS REPLY. To the Editor. Sir,—On the failure of -Bishop Nevill'to verify any of the prevarications a~>d lies of Ah Lee it became necessary for him to show. 8 itne raisqn d'etre for that respite, which he from the Executive With the aid of a certificate, ' Taylor's Medieal'Jnrisv I rudeiio •,' and the ' Daily Tunes,' he wished to' prove, and I suppose he considers that he has proven, my inability to distinguish sheep's blood from human blood when in the dried state. _

This certificate, signed by the so-called Dunediu scientists.- proves, nothing. It simply certifies that Dr Whittou's evidence was insufficient to prove the presence of human blood on the trousers of Ah Lee. \ly evidence, on the contrary, was that the bloo.l found on ah Lee was. not the biood of a sheep. That portion is carefully omitted wherein I stated that I used as a comparison dried sheep's blood, . previously dried on mo'eskhT-for eight days ; and I used the sam 3 medium for moisteuing these blood cells of a sheep and those on the trousers, of Ah Lee ; and that I examined them both together- under a Browning's microscope of 5iX) diameters. The blood cells in l both cases did not correspond in size, tho3e from the trousers appealing double the size of those from tlje-'shisp. The microscope was powerful enough, the comparison was accunte, and the conclusion touud.

Taese scientists are apparently composed of medical men in practice, and who have considered it infra dig to examine the. blood of any being-iower in creation .than that of man; and the remainder are professionalbelonging % to our Educational Institute—who are busily engaged in seeking for protoplasm and_ the origin of life that they cannot waste their time in such practical pursuits as the distinction of human from other mammalian'blood. The certificate was written to order without taking any trouble to examine the matter microscopically or otherwise tor themselves ; they read the, evidence and wrote out the certificate forthwith ; but then that was sufficient for Dunedin scientists.*

.Now, as to "Taylor." 1 did not and do not take him as my infallible guide in medicolegal investigations The possession of such organs as eyes and brains implies the power of observation and judgment; and all that 'Taylor 1 can do is to show one of the best methods of using such facu.t : .es. The ' Daily Times' sagely advi es the Government to purchase and distribute amongst the scientists of Duuedin a few microscopes of extraordinary horse power; but even .with any at preseut in Dunediu, and witfra few drops of the Bishop's' blood (which he ill can spare), 1 venture to - predict that I at once can distinguish the wood of a sheep from the blood of Bishop Nevill.—l am, etc , j\ .. sThojtas Bain Whitton,' L.R.C.S. J i.:Erig. Naseby, November 11. J>^. [We have been requested by Dr Tuition to publish the above letter, which appeared in the ' Evening Star' of Saturday Ed M.I.C.] S^
