MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
NOMINATION AND ELECTION OF COUNCILLORS AND AUDITORS. THE NOMINATION'. The nomination of candidates for the offices of Councillors for the various Wards took ■ place on Saturday. Contrary to custom there was more than one candidate nominated for each Ward. This is no doubt due to the interest felt by the ratepayers in the undertaking which has been resolved on by the Council, namely, the construction of Waterworks. The nominations were as follows :—East Ward : Walter Inder—proposed by A. Craig, seconded by W. Jacob ; Samuel M'Lean Baxter—proposed by D. "rragmaak, seconded by J. Eccles. West Ward : Edward Tobias George—proposed by (J. F. Newmarch, seconded by P. Law; Michael Brooks—proposed by N. P. Hjorring, seconded by John Allan; William Joseph Flynn—proposed by James Brown, seconded by Robert Strong. South Ward: George Frederick Newmarch—proposed by Robert Strong, seconded by G. F. Rowlatt; Richard Moore—proposed by W. Guffie, seconded by T. Ladd ; David Stewart—proposed by James Hore, seconded by George Curi ie. There were only two candidates for the offices of auditors, namely—David Barron and Hugh Wilson, proposed by L. W. Busch, and seconded by R. Strong. They were therefore declared duly elected. The proceedings were of a more lively nature than has been the case for a number of years, being almost equal to what transpired at the declaration of the poll for Koslyn, when Mr.. Driver, according to the ' Morning Herald,' in addressing the defea' ed candidate, (Mr. Ross), remarked: "That is a lie." THE POLL. The poll took place on Thursday, August Ist. The interest shown on the day of nomination had increased twofold. The enforced idleness of a number of the ratepayers tended to enliven the proceeding. The following is a statement of the polling : East Wabd. —Baxter, 15 ; Inder, 18. Majority for Mr. Inder, 3. West Waeu.—Brookes, 24 ; Flynn, 4 ; George, 11. Majority for Mr. Brookes, 13. South Ward.—Moore, 13 ; Newmarch, 10; -Stewart, 10. Majority for Mr. Moore, 6. :
