SWIMMING RECORD BROKEN.
Melbourne, January 24.
Peter Mathieson, New Zealand, broke the Australian 400 metres backstroke record last night by 30 seconds in five minutes 41, 3-5 seconds, defeating Noel Ryan, British Empire champion and Herford, Australian half-mile champion. W. J. Jarvis, New Zealand, won the Victorian 100 yards free style championship in 54 seconds from the Queensland champion, Trimble, and the Victorian champion, Crawford.
