STUDY FOR CLERGYMEN.

A need for the clergy to be equipped by the study of psychotherapy for dealing with neurotic conditions among their parishioners was expressed in a discussion which took place to-day at the Methodist Church District Synod. The matter was raised by a report from the Dominion church welfare committee, which recommended, inter alia, that psychological findings arising from modern investigations into the problems of neurotic personality be related to the worlk of the ministry.Stating that a remarkable percentage of physical ailments was the result of neurosis, the Rev. P. R. Paris said the position opened up a useful field of service to. ministers expert in psychology, and that ministry to a mind diseased was ultimately related to the care of souls. 'Other speakers affirmed that it was high time that the church took up the matter of ministering to mentally ill people. It was pointed out that one in every 300 people in New Zealand was found in mental asylums, and many could have been saved from that by an adequate by well-equipped clergymen.
