MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Manawatu County Council was .held in Sandon on Tuesday, presided over .by Mr W. E. Barber (Chairman). Tre Public Works Department wrote regarding the general enforcement of the licenses granted to transport services and stated that in future it would be a condition of the subsidy granted group traffic officers that such officers included in their duties the regular inspection of licenses issued under the Transport Act. —The County Clerk said that th§ local counties’ group and traffic officer did undertake a certain amount of tliis work with his other duties, but to do all that the Transport Board expected would require private detectives. The Bainesse Co.-op. Dairy Co. wrote drawing the iCouncil’s attention to the spread of broom in the Bainesse district.—lt was stated that some of the broom was on the railway reserve. However, it was agreed to talkie steps to have the broom removed from the roadside. Mr N. R. Sell, Foxton,- asked that the Council improve the access to his property. —It was decided to advise Mr Sell that the existing access was over a private right-of-way, consequently the Council .had no jurisdiction and regretted that it could not do anything. A letter from Mrs A. E. Aston, of Manawatu Heads, complaining about wandering stock was referred to the traffic inspector. . The treasurer reported on the county finances as follows: County Fund Ac., dr., £9663 15/-; Main Highways Loan Ac., er., £1382 16/8 'The tramway manager reported as follows: The items of traffic for October were as follows: Eggs 45 crates; metal, 2705 c.yds., minerals 191 tons; firewood and posts: 5 trucks; merchandise, 13 tons; timgeneral items, 1 ton., The account showed a debit balance of £329 9/5. The engineer reported as follows: Construction.—The contract for the reconstruction of five miles of the Himatangi-Sanson main highway is progressing .saisfactorily. With the exception of a few chains the whole of the base course metal has been spread, but approximately li miles has yet to be planed and finally consolidated. A considerable length of this road surface on the Sanson end will be ready for priming when the weather improves. All final shaping of base course and maintenance of same is being carried out with a multiple blade road maintainer. The contract for the remetalling and sealing of 40 chains of the Rongotea-Longburn maili highway in the Rongotea township has been let to Messrs Laykold Ltd. The work commenced on October 30. Maintenance. —Two culverts have been repaired on the Hima-tangi-Sanson main highway. Serious flooding has again occurred in many parts of the county, more particularly in the Whirokino area. Heavy maintenance had almost been completed on the Whirokino .road following the previous floods and the road was in fair order. On the 30th October this road was again inundated with flood water’s to the depth of approximately G feet and it is not yet clear for traffic. The Foxton-Shannon main highway was flooded for a few hours owing to the river overflowing the banks at Poplar Mill. Practically the whole period since last meeting has been very wet and works which would have been undertaken, have been postponed until more favourable weather prevails. All metal surfaced roads have been graded in their order of urgency.
