THE GENERAL ELECTION.

NOMINATIONS CLOSE ON:- - TUESDAY.

Nominations of candidates for the general election will close at noon on Tuesday, November 12. .Up to to-day advice of only 18 nominations had been received by the chief electoral officer, Mr G. G. Hodgkins, of Wellington. Nomination papers must be signed by at least two electors as well as by the candidate and must be accompanied by a deposit of £lO, which is forfeited if the candidate does not poll one quarter of the total number of votes secured by the successful candidate. ,

Votes were cast by a. number of y Auckland electors who left yesterday by the Wanganella for Sydney . and who were willing to take a chance that their favourite candidate for Parliament would not be “scratched” before the closing of nominations on Tuesday. Thus they not only placed themselves outside the shores of New Zealand but also put themselves irrevocably beyond the blandishments of rival candidates. The exercise of the franchise in this way is made possible by the postal voting system, which permits a postal vote, after the necessary formalities, to be cast at any time after the issue of the election writ and prior to the closing of the

roll. Provided all requirements are <. met the postal vote instead of being sent through the post may be cast and delivered personally in the presence of the returning officer for the elector’s district. The votes cast to-day with others that will be received by the returning officers will be locked away in secret and not put into the post till the official count. The count made on the night of polling day is a provisional one only, postal votes and absent votes not being included in it. MR J. K. HORNBLOW AT LEVIN Mr J. K. Homblow, Independent Candidate for Manawatu, addressed the electors of Levin in the Century Hall last night. Mr P. W. Goldsmith (Mayor) presided and in introducing the candidate referred to his association with various public bodies in this electorate over a long period of years. Mr. Hornblow spoke on similar lines to his address in Poxton and received , a very enthusiastic and attentive hearing. At the conclusion no questions were put to the candidate with the exception of the usual,.' string of written Douglas Credit questions handed in prior to the meeting, asking if the candidate favoured monetary reform, etc., to which he gave a similar reply to the requests when made in Poxton.

The speaker was accorded a. hearty vote of thanks for his address.
