Kapiti Island was reached at 10 pin. and at 2 a.m. on Wednesday the Enterprise left for Manawatu Heads. Heavy weather was encountered, however, and when off the-bar it was seen that it would be impossible for the boat to make port so it returned to shelter at Kapiti and remained there until this morning when, the weather having'abated, the journey was resumed. The ran up this morning occupied only three hours and the trip from Wellington to. Kapiti eight--,hours, so that the total rnnning time; was only 11 hours. v

Captain Yendore is very .pleased with the boat’s performance and he experienced some fairly stiff weather in which to try her ouf. The Enterprise he considers an - excellent sea boat. / ;

The boat is forty feet long and has a. ten foot beam and is built of picked heart of kauri with hard wood principals. The vessjel was constructed at Wellington by Messrs Jukes and Co., and is; only eighteen months old. The ;hull is lined throughout with £SO worth of lead and is very strongly constructed. There are two hatches, one forrard and the other near the stern and on the forrard deck is a winch operated by the engines below. The’ steering is by twto connected wheels, one outside on deck . and the other in the glass-enclosed deck house which contains a compass and other necessary gear for steering and navigating in bad weather. Oil guages are. handy as well as the engine gear to enable the boat to be operated by one man. The vessel is fitted with electric light and riding lights apd has one mast. , 1 The boat is driven by two Diesel engines which can be operated either singly or in conjunction with each other. The engines are rated at 38 h.p,, driving the boat at 7 knots per hour; and 14 h.p., with a speed of G knots and together 10 knots. The running costs as far as fuel are concerned, average 1/per hour. J The boat has a draft of 4ft. Gin. and should ho suitable fop the Manawatu River and bar work. Tests in connection with harrowing however, will be carried out next week when the Board will be called upon to make its final decision in the matter of purchase. |
