PARLIAMENT

ESTIMATES NEARLY THROUGH

With the exception of five votes consideration of the main Estimates of departmental and Government expenditure for the current financial year was completed yesterday by the House of Representatives. Eleven classes, representing an aggregate sum of £8,155,439, were passed during the day. The lai-gest individual vote was that of £3,540,000 to cover pension payments and the cost of the administration of the Pensions Department. Incidentally, on this . vote there was no discussion, and no one appeared more surprised than the Minister of Pensions, Hon. J. G. Gobbe, when the item passed without comment. The subject, however, has already been very fully debated, legislation dealing with pensions having given members that opportunity. ... Consideration of the Estimates will be continued when members resume on Tuesday, following the week-end adjournment. The classes yet to be passed are those for the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (discussion on this was interrupted by the adjournment), the State Advances Account, Education Department, Working Railways Account, and for the administration of the Unemployment Fund. After these the Public Wlorks Estimates will be taken. Less than a day will possibly be sufficient for this. With the completion of the Estimates one of the milestones of the session will be left behind. The Avay will then be clear for uninterrupted progress . with legislation. Although more Government Bills are due for inJroduction, the general impression is that the session will finish about October 25 at the latest.
