PARTICIPANT IN “TATTS” FINED.
, IGNORANCE of law no EXCUSE. Napier, November 6. Participation in a Tattersall’s sweepstake, which is a prohibited lottery in New Zealand, cost L. A. Codings a fine of £1 and costs 10s on a charge laid in the Napier Magistrate’s Court this morning under the Gaming Act. Mr R. M. Watson, S.M., referring to defendant’s plea that he did not Ikmow he was committing a breach of the law, said: “Ignorance of the law is no excuse. I might point out that the maximum penaltv under this section is £10.”
Detective Sergeant J. Biekerdike said defendant made a complaint to the police on August 30 last that letters had not been reaching the addressee. Investigations were made and subsequently defendant admitted that the letters contained Tattersall’s tickets, to Avhich he and three others had contributed two shillings each. The detective sergeant submitted that defendant did not actually have to possess a ticket to be guilty under the section, Avhich provided penalties for participation in prohibited lotteries.
