UNEMPLOYMENT TAX.
. PENDING EXEMPTIONS. Details of amendments to the unemployment tax charges have been 'announced by the Unemployment Board.' All persons under the age of 20 years are to be exempt from payment of the wages tax on any remuneration earned on or after November 12.
Commencing with the quarterly instalment due on May 1, 1935, the following may declare their exemption from payment of the tax on income other than salary or wages, provided their total income for the twelve months on which the tax is assessable did not exceed £104: Females of 60 years of age or over; and males of 65 years of age or over; and persons of either sex who, through permanent physical or mental disability, are unable to follow any regular employment.
Exemption is ■ provided for females in receipt of- pensions under the Pensions Act, 1926, and also for all femalesi under the age of 20 years. Males under twenty years of age are already exempt. The exemption of £2O granted to women in receipt of income other than salary or wages has been increased to £SO.
All Natives, riiale or female, who have attained the age of 20 years are now liable. Hitherto they have been required to pay the tax on salary arid wages. Female Natives are, of course, entitled to the exemption of £SO granted to other females.
' A provision in the Act is that the Unemployment Board is empowered to make an assessment of the tax payable by any person who has failed to submit a declaration of income or Avith whose declaration the board is not satisfied. The amount of tax involved in such an ..assessment will be payable, unless the person concerned is able to satisfy the board that. the assessment is excessive.
