A sharp shock of earthquake, lasting about thirty seconds, ,was felt in Foxton on Thursday evening at 11.6 p.m. 11 was accompanied by quite a loud rumble. “Foxton is a very nice town, but you don’t want to walk on _ the footpath when its raining,” said a visitor to Foxton to a member of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce. The matter was mentioned at Thursday evening's meeting when the member asked if anything could be done to have the various shop verandahs made water-tight. It was generally agreed that some of the verandahs in Main Street were in a bad state of repair but the Chamber decided that it could do nothing in the matter of effecting a remedy.

“It’s far easier to throw bricks than bouquets,” said a member-of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce on Thursday evening, “hut I think we should pay a, compliment to the Foxton Borough Council for the excellent manner in which it has cleaned up its property in the 'town. The renovation of Easton Park gates, the Council Chambers and environments, and the Triangle and Soldiers’ monument reflects credit on the Council and in my opinion we should write and tell them so.” It was decided to do this. Incidentally the Mayor, who was present at the meeting, mentioned that Ihakara Gardens .fence was to lie given a “clean-up” also.

Smoking contests arc still held in England. Recently mine host of the Seven Bells Inn, near Rochfort, offered a keg' of prime ale to the man who smoked the most tobacco at a sitting. Seven men eoH|peted for the prize each linding his own tobacco, the landlord supplying the ■ longclays. There were numerous onlookers. The winner proved to be a young farm-labourer who smoked 1 half-a-dozen full pipes of plug (black as your hat!) one after the other. He seemed to have had enough of smoking when he was through! If a smoke contest ever eventuates n N.Z. the competitor who tills up with “toasted” will have an easy win! There are five brands of this famous tobacco. Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Cavendish, Riverhead Gold, Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead) and Desert Gold, you can smoke any quantity of them be obtuse —-being toasted —they are p'ractically free from nicotine, besides being- unequalled for flavour and bouquet. Also it should be noted that they are not only fine pipe tobaccos but make excellent cigarettes. —Advt.

In ’buses, trams, in streets, in shops, The flu’ germs are around, In any place where there’s a crowd They surely Avill be found, So guard against the germs of ’flu Be from them quite secure, And for a certain remedy Use Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure. —20.

Several cases of scarlet fever have been reported locally. “A lot of weird things can happen when one car strikes another, observed the lion. Mr Justice Blaii in the Palmerston North Supreme Court yesterday. His Honour said lie knew of an accident where a baby Austin upset a Ford lorry. The result depended entirely on where a car was bit. An unsuccessful attempt was made U> draw the Minister 01. finance (Hon. J. G. Coates) into enlightening- members as to the date of the next general election in the House yesterday. In preparation for the coming swimming season, Borough employees, under the direction of the Borough overseer, Mr 11. Cliaunings, have • during the past two days effected considerable improvement in the Levin Coronation Baths (says the Chronicle). The main feature lias been the cleaning of the sides and bottom of the baths and the resurfacing of the cement with “Snowcrete,” the appearance being greatly enhanced. A member raised a laugh at the Foxton Chamber of Commerce meeting on Thursday evening when the question of obtaining more support for the nightwatchman was under discussion. Mr Christie had just stated that lie considered that it was only the fact that Foxton possessed a nightwatchman that bad kept the town so free from burglaries when an interjected begged to differ. “It is Foxton’s wellknown reputation for poverty,” he remarked and when the laughter bad died down the Mayor (Mr M. E. Perrcau) was heard to voice bis objection to such an insinuation.
