FOXTON’S NIGHTWATCHMAN.
AIGRE SUPPORT WANTED. At Thursday evening’s meeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce Air D. Christie urged that local business people should give more financial assistance to supporting a nightwatchman. “New Zealand is at present being confronted with an epidemic of burglaries.” said Air Christie, “and I consider it is due to the fact that Foxton has a nightwatchman —and a good man, too—that we have been so free from this trouble. All he is receiving at the present time for walking the streets nightly for seven nights a week is 15/- per week. Only a few business people subscribe to his retention —the bigger percentage deriving benefit for no outlay at all which is not fair.” While the Chamber fully apprecited the good and conscientious work carried out by the nightwatehman it was regretted that it could do nothing in the way of assisting financially and this was left to personal canvass.
