OPENING OF SHANNON GREEN

Yesterday afternoon two rinks from. Foxton were present at the official opening of Shannon Bowling Club’s green, when they had a very pleasant time. The President, Mr J. Roach, welcomed the visitors, and in the course of his remarks referred to the fact that he had a very pleasant duty to perform in the presensation of a certificate to Mr A. H. Morgan, who had gained the distinction, of being the singles champion in the Mauawatu Centre contest last season. In presenting Mr Morgan, with the certificate he extended the congratulations of his eluhmates. The President also referred to the presence of Mr Gunning “the father of Shannon Club,” and also to the valuable work carried out by the secretary, Mr C, P. Grey, in the interests of the club, and the work of others for which the club was indebted. Mr Gunning was honoured with the privilege of throwing the first jack of the season, and Mrs Roach delivered the first howl, to the accompaniment of applause, when the green was declared open for play. The ladies of the croquet club and members’ wives presided over a tasty afternoon tea, which was much appreciated. The games played were carried through in the usual jovial spirit which characterises Fnxtou-Shc.n-tion contests, and the visitors were fortunate in winning both matches by substantial margins. The details are as follow: —Readdon, Hudson, Trueman, Mattar (s) 2-1, v. Stearn, Collins, Alexander, Morgan’ (s) 10. Eruera, Newth, Huntrev, Jno. Ross (s) 29, v. G. Hook, E! Butt, P. ITemingsen, A. Hyde (s) 13. At the conclusion of play the thanks of the visitors were conveyed to the Shannon Club by Mr Jno. Ross, Foxton Club’s president, and cheers were exchanged.

HAYDOCK PINS. The first game of the season fertile Haydoek Pins was played yesterday morning, when the holders from last season, Marston and Mattar (s) were defeated by the challengers, Eruera and Robinson, hv 4 points, after a close game, the final scores being 27 —23. TERRACE END OPENING. One rink from Foxton attended the Terraco End official opening on Saturday last, and report having had a pleasant time. In their game against P. Child’s rink, Foxton — Howe, Edwards, Marston,-J. Ross, (s) —had a margin of 5 points to spare, the final scores being 25—20.
