ELUSIVE MONKEY.

TRICKS ON A TRAIN,

After defying efforts at capture at the railway station, at Liverpool, New South Wales, recently, a monkey which had escaped from a circus, leaped on a Sydney-bound electric train and eluded its pursuers until after the train had passed Cabramatta. After a time the monkey crawled under the engine and sat on the ash-pan, baring its teeth viciously at all who approached it. -- The driver moved the engine slowly to frighten the animal, but it remained on the ash-pan until the engine reached the station, when it leaped to the crowded platform, scattering passengers and still eluding capture. An electric train drew in to the station, and the monkey got on the roof of a carriage, but it was dislodged with a stout rope.

The monkey then disappeared, but before the train had gone a mile it crawled into a crowded carriage from the buffers. At Cabramatta the stationmaster and the guard endeavoured once more to remove it, but after mauling the guard’s hand severely, the monkey hung on a luggage rack. After the train moved off the monkey once more got down among the passengers. The guard, and several other men, using their coats as shields, drove it to the guard's compartment, where it was locked up until the train arrived at North Svduey. There three railway employees threw an overcoat over it, and placed it in a large case. The monkey was returned by train to the circus at Campbelltown none the worse for its escapade.

The railway authorities were considering whether they will make a demand on the circus owner for the monkey’s fare.
