TOO MANY LOCAL BODIES.
CONFERENCE QUESTION. That there were too many local bodies in New Zealand was the opinion expressed by Cr. F. Campbell at the Lower Hutt Borough Council meeting this week. He hoped that the question would be freely discussed at the conference of local bodies to be held at Rotorua next month.
Cr. Campbell stated that reform was long overdue, and a decrease in the nuniger of local bodies would make for greater efficiency. The Mayor, Air. W. T. Strand, said that. New Zealand-was overgoverned, •‘Did you say misgoverned?” queried Cr. A. Mcßain.
“They run parallel,” retorted the Afayor, who went on to say it was time that half the local bodies committed suicide. “What about the members of Parliament?” asked a councillor. The Alayor: I would reduce them bv two-thirds.
