LIST OF NOMINATIONS

FOUR RETURNED UNOPPOSED

Last-minute withdrawals and readjustments in • various districts have left 189 eanlidates for the general election as compared with 212 in 1928. Nominations for the 70 European seats closed at noon yesterday and, as was feared, there will he a considerable amount of vote-splitting throughout the country in spite of the fact that the main issue lies between the policies of the Coalition and the Labour Party. An analysis of the nominations shows that a total of 71 seats will be contested by official Government candidates, 41 of these being Reform Coalitionists and 29 United Coalitionists, the other being Mr W. if. Poison, an Independent, who has received the endorsement of the Government for Stratford. Official Labour candidates have been put forward in 50 electorates, and no fewer than 22 straight-out Independents are standing. In addition there are 13 Independent Reformers and 10 Independent United candidates, as well as a number of others going under delferent banners which, in many instances, give no real indication of the policy of the candidate. In two electorates there are five candidates, in five there are fourcornered contests, in 24 three candidates are nominated and in 41 there are only two in the field. Four members of the previous Parliament have reason to lie gratified, for they are returned unopposed. They are the Hon. E. A. Ransom, Minister of Lands (Pahiatua), the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, Minister of Defence (Oroun), Mr W. J. Broadfoot, and Mr K. S. Williams, Coalition candidates for Waitomo and Bay of Plenty respectively. There are only two women candidates, Miss Ellen Melville, who is standing for Auckland East, and Mrs G. R. McCombs, who is standing for Christchurch North. The full list of candidates noini- • nated is given below.
