4. SHIPMENT ARRIVES IN NAPIER. Tn reply to Air F .Lnngstone in the House, Mr Forbes stated that tlie Public Work's Department hail been instructed to use New Zealand timber wherever possible. Mr Langstono stated it seemed that speculators intended to import timber witli a view to having it used in the reconstruction of the earthquake area. A large shipment of foreign timber had recently arrived at Napier. lie asked the Government to prevent the possibility of any part of the belief funds being spent on imported timber when New Zealand millers had plenty of supplies on hand to meet all demands. The Prime Minister said he had ascertained that one merchant had imported a supply of timber. He did not anticipate that the relief funds would be used for building purposes.
