Nino local Territorials arc at present attending- a camp at Waverley. They left Uoxton last Wednesday and will return home on Saturday of next week after having undergone their annual training.
During Hebrunry rain fell locally on eight days, a total of 1.14 in - ches being- recorded. The maximum fall was Aid of an inch on the Kith. The coldest day was the HHli when the thermometer registered 57 degrees and the hottest was the 14th with 70 degrees. As a result, of trouble the s.s LJimutangi is held.up in Wellington. The dispute! concerns the location of a new messrooni on the boat. An agreement was reached that the men should take up the room forward which was favourably received bv the men, but it is reported that the Seamen’s Union then step lied in and vetoed the proposal.
Wlhen noxious woods were under discussion at the monthly meeting of the Manawatu Rabbit Hoard on Thursday, Trustee W. E. Barber said that there were two -kinds of blackberry prevalent in the Mannwatu. One was the small old-la shinned berry which was a native nt England and the other was the large, lueious variety, which spread far mi ore rapidly than the other species and was a native of America.
A tender has been accepted by the Main Highways Board for the const ruction of a ferro-eoncrei e bridge over the (li-oua River at Aorangi to replace the present wooden structure. The contract price for the bridge is £12,000. This, of course, does not include the cost of approaches, the taking of land, the ibitumenising- of-- the surface of the bridge and other expenses and it is anticipated that the original estimate of (.'1.5,000 for tin' whole work will prove sutlieien;. The contractor was in iKeilding on Tuesday making arrangements l'< r an early start on the work which will occupy some mouths.
The annual picnic and prize-giv-ing in connection with the ttangioiu neliool took place yesterday on the banks of the Oroua River. There was a large attendance of pupils and parents. .Messrs Donaldson (chairman of committee) and Walker (head teacher) assisted by a willing band of helpers carried out the sports arrangements in which young and old participated. Air. .). K. Ilornldow (Board member) distributed the prizes and briefly addressed the gathering. Uadi child received a prize. The complete arrangements, perfect weather and ideal situation helped to make the outing one of the most enjoyable vet held.
