ALLEGED SLANDER.
STATEMENT CONCERNING CAR. Dunedin, August 18. In the Supreme iCourt, Thomas Henry Brown claimed £SOO from George Augustus Herbert for alleged slander, based on a statement made by defendant that plaintiff had the speedometer of his motorcar wound back 5000 miles before selling it, thereby involving himself in a conspiracy to defraud. Plaintiff denied having tampered with the meter or instructing anyone else to do so, while defendant maintained that his words were true and that the meter was actually wound back. Judge Ostler accepted the evidence of plaintiff as time, he having proved that the speedometer was not wound back. Defendant had made an impudent and daring attempt to defeat the course of justice. The Judge directed the Registrar to impound all the exhibits, and said that he would consider whether to recommend the police to investigate with a view to criminal proceedings.
