THE GENERAL ELECTION.

ROLLS OPEN FOR INSPECTION. TOTALS IN EACH ELECTORATE. The new general electoral rolls for the Dominion have been printed, and are now available for public inspection. Inculding the applications already received for incorporation in the supplementary rolls, the total number of registered electors, as at July 31, was 702,995 compared with a total on both rolls at the 1925 elections of 754,113. 'When the electoral boundaries are altered by the Representation Commissions as was done last year, the registrars of electors arc required to form fresh electoral rolls for the new districts, within a prescribed time. This work was completed recently, and the printing of the rolls was put in hand. The rolls have now been printed, and are open for perusal by the public at post offices and public buildings throughout the Dominion. A substantial increase in the number of registrations is disclosed.

MORE ELECTORS ENROLLED. The number of electors on the general and supplementary rolls used for the 1925 general election was 754,113, while the number on the new general rolls totals 751,206. Between the closing of the general rolls on July 5 and July 31 last 16,454 new applications for registration were recorded, and these will form the basis of the supplementary rolls which are now being compiled. It is to be remembered that the supplementary rolls do not close until the writ for the general election is issued. The returns show that the number of removals from' the various electoral rolls by transfer and death amount to 4665, while the number of changes of address within the districts is given as 2428. The total number of registered electors for the Dominion as at the end of last month was 762,995, so that when the supplementary rolls finally ei|ose there will be an even greater increase than is at present revealed on the 1925 figures. A TWENTY-YEAR I COMPARISON. •Returns covering the registrations for the general elections in the last twenty years, taken out last week, show a steady growth in the size of the rolls. Since 1905 the increase is represented by 286,522, and if the present rate of progress is maintained, it will not be long before there 'are a million electors on the rolls. The appended figures show the number of electors registered for each general election since 1905: — 1905 467,473 1908 537,003 1911 590,042 1914 616,043 1919 683,420 1922 700,111 1925 745,113 THE NEW GENERAL ROLLS.
