SCHOOL SPORTS.

FOXTON-LEVIN HIGH SCHOOLS v. HUTT HIGH SCHOOL. On Saturday last about 30. pupils of the local High School journeyed to Levin under the charge of Mesrrs Mason' Doel and Burdes to combine with the Levin High School for the purpose of playing a series of games—(football and basketball —versus Hutt Valley High School. The combined schools met the fifty odd enthusiasts from the Hutt when they got off the 11.30 train, and conducted them to the Levin school grounds, where welcoming speeches were made by Mr. Hutchings (chairman of Levin School Committee), Mr. Hobson (Mayor of Levin), and Mr. Mason (headmaster of Foxton—D.H.S.), the lastnamed apologising for the absence of Mr. Foss (headmaster of Levin D.H.S.), who had gone to Wellington. Mr.McNaught of the Hutt Valley High School replied suitably, and a start was then made with the sports programme. FOOTBALL. The Levin-Foxton team contained 8 Foxton boys, viz., Perreau, Wanklyn, Ilirini, Mason, Adams, Moore, Rickerby, and Alexander —five of these being in the scrum. When Perreau led his team on to the field along with the Hutt team it was seen that the visitors had a much heavier vanguard, but the hacks were a more even lot. From the kick-off both teams played splendid football, and few opportunities were lost. After about 10 minutes, play_ went into the visitor’s 25, from where Moore picked up in the loose and scored well out. Ilirini missed the kick.

At this stage of the game the Hutt forwards were superior, but the local backs evened matters. Even play therefore followed until from a line-out near* the Foxton line, a Hutt forward scored. The kick at goal missed. Foxton 3 Hutt 3.

Five minutes later, Henderson, of the Hutt, scored a similar try, and the kick this time went fairly between the uprights. Half-time came soon after with the score B—38 —3 in favour of the visitors. From the kick-off in the second half the local forwards proved their worth, despite the weight handicaps. They were more than holding their own. A Foxton lad.was again first to draw blood —Mason getting possession from a line-out, and with 10 yards to go managed to get past the 3 players of the Hutt rear-division who barred his path, and grounded the ball in a fair position. Wanklyn’s kick failed. Hutt B—Foxton-Levin8 —Foxton-Levin 6. After some even, but intensely interesting payl Mason repeated his feat and Roe converted. FoxtonLevin li—Hutt 8. Excitement now ran high, and the Hutt boys made desperate efforts. Suddenly Hutt’s speed merchant, Henderson, caught the opposition napping; he got possession in the loose and with at least 60 yards to go set out for the line, and after a great run scored under the posts, making the scores even, 11 — 11. The fate of the game then hung on the kick, and Clegg took no chances with this. Taking, his time he landed a nice goal. Hutt 13 — Foxton- Levin 11. Soon after time was called, the local vanguard being hot on the attack.

Foxton players are to be congratulated on scoring 9 of the 11 points. The forwards especially played a good game—Moore and Mason being the pick of the local vanguard. Perreau played his usual sound game at half, but Ilirini was below his best form. Wanklyn as rover has played better games, but nevertheless did some good work. A second fifteen was also got together to meet a junior team from the Hutt, but owing to the failure of some of the Levin boys to turn odt, it was a rather weak combination which took the field, to be soundly trounced to the tune of 24 te nil. BASKET BALL. FOXTON v. HUTT VALLEY B. It might be mentioned that theiyi is practically no difference in the prowess of the Hutt A team, which was defeated by the Levin girls by 26 —18, and that of the Hutt B team. The A team is selected from the senior forms, the B team from the junior forms. It was early seen that the visitors were the masters of the local girls in the finer points of the game, their passing being.of a very high order. Even so had the Foxton girls played as good a game as they did against Mar ton the Saturday before it would have been a close contest. At half-time the score was 13 —6 in favour of Hutt. Soon after starting again the local girls dominated play for some time, but then they suddenly went to pieces, and could do nothing right. Ilutt scored goal after goal, and the game ended 37 —8. The visitors were entertained at dinner, and after the games, at afternoon tea in Levin tea-rooms. They left on their return journey about 5 p.m., being farewelled by the Foxton and Levin scholars.
