FOXTON HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
COMMITTEE MEETING. SPRING SHOW SEPTEMBER 13th. A committee meeting of the above Society was held in the Presbyterian schoolroom last evening, presided over by Mr. D. Christie (president). There were also present: Mesdames R. Moore, Murphy, S. Easton, Procter, Misses J. Ross, Gower, Messrs Poole, Murphy, Cresswell, T. Hughes, Jas. Ross, Walton, Corn, and the secretary (Mr. W. 11. Nicholas). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs John Ross, C. Symons, and R. Hornblow. On the motion of the President a vote of sympathy was passed to the relatives of the late Mr. D. Whibley. The President paid a tribute to the keen interest the late Mr. Whibley had taken in the Society since its inception. The motion was carried in silence. The President said it had been decided to add a photographic class, school cookery and cottage garden section to the schedule. He had arranged with the sc-hOol cookery instructress (Mrs. Wolf), to have the school exhibits for the Spring Show. He stated that it would not be possible to have srhool garden exhibits this year, but the school committee were setting aside a piece of land which would be placed under cultivation and exhibits would-be shown ats übsequent shows. He thought a class for amateur photography would prove attractive. He had also received a promise of a donation of one guinea for children’s elocutionary competitions. Such competitions would be both educational and interesting.
It was decided to hold over the photographic class until the summer show.
A committee consisting of Mrs. Moore, Messrs Poole and Hornblow were appointed to draw up conditions for the children!* elocutionary class. Resolved to donate £1 towards the cost of ingredients in the school cookery class. The following new members were elected: Messrs John Belt, James Ross, Dorset, Riches, Mesdames S. Austin and L. C. Bryant.
The date of the Spring Show was fixed for Thursday, September 13th.
The following donations were acknowledged: Colosseum Stores 7/6, S. H. Poole £1 1/-, F. Mason, 10/6, C. Symons £1 1/-, Mrs. Walls, cake, Messrs Evans and Sawyer (Manakau) 10/6, J. Chrystal) £1 1/-, Mrs. Nicholas 5/-, and anonymous £1 1/- for children’s competitions.
The question of appointing a trustee, vice Mr. D. Whibley, deceased, was discussed and it was decided to appoint Mr. W. Nye. It was pointed out that the oilier trustee was Mr. Walsh. In answer to a question the President said the rules did not provide for the appointment of trustees nor were their duties defined, but the insurance policy was taken out in their names. Accounts were passed for payment.
It was decided to take out a fire policy on the Society’s effects in the office which had previously held the risk.
The schedule was then reviewed and adopted. The following judges weiF appointed: —Bulbs: Mr. Mason (Marton); cut blooms: Mr. Shailer (Palmerston North); decorative: Madame de Roex (Levin); home industries: Mr. Whitehead (Palmerston North).
