DAYLIGHT SAVING SCHEME.

FOR CENTRES OF POPULATION. NEW BILL TO BE INTRODUCED. A Bill providing for local sum-mer-time is to be introduced in the House of Representatives by Mr. T. K. Sidey (Dunedin South). It will permit city and borough councils, county councils, and town boards to bring in summer-time in the areas under their jurisdiction by the passing of a special resolution, which must be.advertised and not come up for confirmation within one month from the date it is passed. The period of summer-time is to be not longer than from the first Sunday in October to the third Sunday in March, and the clocks are not to be advanced for more than one hour. In an interview after he had given notice yesterday of his intention to ■introduce the Bill, Mr. Sidey said that the Post Office authorities did not anticipate any great difficulty in working under the different times which would be created _by the adoption of local summer-time. The Railway Department would have to make alterations in the time-tables of its suburban services to meet the changed conditions. REJECTED IN PAHIATUA. Pahiatua, August 8. The Borough Council, on the casting vote of the Mayor, rejected a proposal by Cr. Dr. H. T. Dawson that the Council consider a local daylight saving scheme. Cr. F. G. Bourke: “I think we ought to be directed by our legislators. They have seen fit to rule it out, We should abide by that.” During a brisk debate the Mayor remarked: “We can’t dictate to the inhabitants of Pahiatua what they are to have. If they want daylight saving they can make the move first.” Cr. P. Tulloch regarded the scheme as impracticable. Farmers, the back-bone of the country, should be considered.
